Thought we’d share a little insight into what’s going on in the fields at the moment!
We finished harvesting back in August and sowed the fields with stubble turnips, before they are planted again in March with Spring Barley. The stubble turnips grow through the Autumn, capturing the available nitrogen, so that it doesn’t leach away through the soil.
The turnips are then either ploughed in to benefit the following crop of Barley or grazed by sheep as seen in the pics. Both methods are sustainable ways of helping soil structure and conserving vital nutrients that would otherwise be lost throughout the Winter.
